Choking and The Heimlich Maneuver

I decided to brush up on my Heimlich Maneuver and CPR training because Colin had a scary choking spell over the weekend. He had a large piece of cheese blocking his airway and could not breathe for 20-30 secs (felt like minutes).

David did several back blows until Colin coughed up the cheese. Thank God! We were SO relieved, and Colin was ready to finish his dinner. But my hands were literally shaking as I fed him the rest of his food. I think this scared me more than any fall or injury thus far.

Needless to say, choking is one of my worst fears. I'm literally scared to swallow pills and would still take medication in a liquid form if I could. I even took a CPR class, and I'm confident that I know the Heimlich Maneuver. I guess "knowing it" and actually "performing it" on your own child are two very different things. I was so grateful that David was home this weekend to help.

I hope to never need to use this technique again, but here is a quick video if you want to learn how to perform the Heimlich or just refresh your memory on a very important, life saving skill...

Why am I not surprised that Colin LOVES cars?




He definitely gets this from David's side of the family! haha


However, he also LOVES dogs - what a cute puppy.


Maybe he got that from me!


I'm still betting that this little guy wants to be just like his daddy when he grows up.


But I can't wait for him to put the first dent/scratch in David's car. Then he'll come running to mommy for a big hug!!!

La Jolla

We did it! David and I took our first vacation as a couple (no baby) in over a year. It was 4 days, 3 nights in beautiful southern California. I missed Colin SO much but it was pretty nice to relax and enjoy my new freedom. In fact, I only called once/day to check on my babies (but I probably thought about them over 100 times/day).

La Jolla was amazing - the weather was 70 degrees with warm sunshine and a cool ocean breeze. Needless to say, we laid by the pool, walked on the beach, lunched, shopped and took naps WHENEVER we wanted. So refreshing! So fun!

A special thanks to our families for baby sitting, dog sitting, house sitting and traveling to Austin so we could escape for a few days.

Super Baby

David and I took Colin for his 1 year well check today.

Weight = 20 lbs. 7 oz. (10%)
Height = 29.75 in. (25-50%)
Head = 47.9 cm. (75-90%)

Just a few weeks into his first year, Colin:
- Spends 90% of his day walking
- Babbles, sings and growls
- Can throw and kick a ball
- Points at everything with his index finger
- Knows some sign language: more, all done
- Can shake his head "no, no"
- Loves to empty drawers and containers
- Cuddles, hugs and gives wet, sloppy kisses

We LOVE our super baby boy!!!

Labor Day Weekend

I love 3 day weekends! Can't every weekend be this way? We took Colin to Whitney's first birthday party (complete with a bounce house) for some Labor Day fun. The kids had a blast - Colin ate hot dogs and cup cakes - and bounced until his cheeks were bright red. I think he was on a sugar high until the wee hours of the night. No more cake please, mom and dad are exhausted.
